Sibley depicts and annotates 810 species and 350
regional populations, showing their stages, forms,
shapes, colors, and markings. He describes each
species' call and provides full-color range maps
showing migrations routes as well as summer,
winter, and breeding locations. Sibley spent over
10 years creating this incredible identification
guide, illustrating all of the birds himself.
Birders may want to keep a copy of Sibley at home
as a reference, but the wealth of information will
have the same effect on novices as trying to pick
out a single sandpiper in a wheeling flock of
thousands. The familiar yellow warbler, for
instance, gets no less than nine individual
illustrations documenting its geographic,
seasonal, and sex variations--plus another eight
smaller illustrations showing it in flight. All
of us at The Nature Store agree that this book is
a definite must for anyone who uses a bird field
guide. 544 pages; flexibound, 6 x 9.5 inches.
